Painting (Recoating) Stucco

Over time, rain erodes the thin coating of stucco that encapsulates the sand that creates the texture layer. When this happens, the texture can easily be removed if the wall is cleaned with a pressure washer, or with time as the rain continues to erode the surface of the stucco.

To prevent the loss of your texture, the stucco should be recoated or painted every 10-12 years.

Many companies use paint to recoat the stucco layer, but Master Stucco uses a material manufactured by one of the stucco companies called a coating, not paint. Basically, the coating is stucco without the large sand added to it, making this material a better choice than any acrylic paint that can be purchased from a paint store.

Coatings can be made in any color that you want, is applied just like paint, and costs the same as most good paints.

Prior to applying any paint or coating material, the stucco should be cleaned to remove any dirt or mildew which would affect the adhesion of the paint or coating material. If rubbing your hand across the surface of the stucco causes the sand particles to come off, don't use a pressure washer to clean the surface or you may cause major damage to the stucco texture.

Master Stucco has trained its staff to prepare the stucco area without causing any damage to the original stucco as shown in the photo below where the stucco layer was damaged while being pressure washed. Master Stucco is so confident in the ability of its staff to clean your stucco without damaging the surface that if we cause any damage to the texture of your stucco during the cleaning process, we will repair the damaged area FREE OF CHARGE.

After the stucco has been cleaned, any damage to the stucco including any holes, dents, settlement damage, missing texture, or delamination should be repaired. Any caulking that is failing should also be removed and replaced with new caulking.

Another advantage of selecting Master Stucco to recoat your stucco is that we repair most minor damage that we find on stucco houses that we paint for NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.

Any areas that are not going to be painted should be protected from any overspray or paint drips using plastic, tape, and paper. Master Stucco spends a lot of time protecting the surfaces around the areas where we work, which saves money spent by others to clean up messes that are preventable.

The photo to the right is a worst case scenario where a paint company who was inexperienced with painting stucco surfaces not only produced an ugly looking job, but because they applied paint unevenly to the surface, they plugged up the pores of the stucco, making an expensive repair job. Master Stucco has the experience to do the job right and again, if we don't get it right, we will fix the problem.

Lastly, selecting a paint color can be difficult, especially when your only option is to find a color from a small sample in a paint swatch book that has no texture on it. Master Stucco has made this process easier by creating 88 different colored stucco sample boards that are 8' x 8' in size. Not only can you hold the sample up to your wall and easily see what your property would look like in that color, but you can also check the color at different times of the day to make sure that the color you select looks great in all lighting.

At Master Stucco, we're always thinking of how we can improve the process of making our customers happy, giving them options no one else even thought of.
