Painting (Recoating)

 

  Over time, rain erodes the thin coating of stucco that encapsulates the sand that creates the texture layer. When this happens, the texture can easily be removed if the wall is cleaned with a pressure washer, or with time as the rain continues to erode the surface of the stucco.

  To prevent the loss of your texture, the stucco should be recoated or painted every 10-12 years.

  Many companies use paint to recoat the stucco layer, but Master Stucco uses a material which does not fade that is manufactured by a specialty coating company. Basically, the coating is better than the original stucco because it does not fade or oxidize, and is more resilient to erosion from rain, making this material a better choice than any acrylic paint that can be purchased from a paint store.

  Coatings can be made in any color that you want, are applied just like paint, and costs the same as most good paints.

  Prior to applying any paint or coating material, the stucco should be cleaned to remove any dirt or mildew which would affect the adhesion of the paint or coating material. If rubbing your hand across the surface of the stucco causes the sand particles to come off, don't use a pressure washer to clean the surface or you may cause major damage to the stucco texture.

  Any areas that are not going to be painted should be protected from any overspray or paint drips using plastic, tape, and paper. Master Stucco spends a lot of time protecting the surfaces around the areas where we work, which saves money spent by others to clean up messes that are preventable.

  We have seen the worst case scenario many times: a paint company who was inexperienced with painting stucco surfaces comes in and paints a stucco surface. They not only produced an ugly looking job, but because they applied paint unevenly to the surface, they plugged up the pores of the stucco, making for an expensive repair job. Master Stucco has the experience to do the job right the first time. If we do not get it right, we can and will fix the problem.

  Lastly, selecting a paint color can be difficult, especially when your only option is to find a color from a small sample in a paint swatch book that has no texture on it. Master Stucco has made this process easier by creating 160 different colored stucco sample boards that are 10" x 8" in size. Not only can you hold the sample up to your wall and easily see what your stucco would look like in that color, but you can also check the color at different times of the day to make sure that the color you select looks great in all lighting.
