Moisture related damage to stucco structures happens when water migrates through the stucco and is absorbed by the wood on which the stucco is attached. Proper installation of stucco requires the use of flashings to divert water away from the stucco and caulking to prevent water from entering behind the stucco at all locations where the stucco has penetrations (windows, doors, pipes, etc.).
Even if stucco is installed properly, water can still bypass these barriers if the wood trim surrounding the windows and doors rots, allowing the water to enter the wall. For example the photo to the right was taken of a rotted window frame. The damage is severe enough to allow water into the wall, causing wood rot, mold, and providing moisture for termites and ants.
Master Stucco knows how to repair this type of damage, preventing unnecessary damage to your home or business.
Even damaged soffits and fascia boards can allow moisture to enter into the wall at the top of the wall as shown in the photo to the left and below. Gutters often leak, especially at the corners, allowing water to drain into the wood fascia board.
Most of the time, the rotting takes place in the corners of the windows where the wood joints are not caulked and can absorb water in at these intersections.
Damage to the framing inside the wall can be prevented if these wood trim pieces are repaired early enough.
Some windows cannot be repaired because the rotted wood is beyond repair, or because the location of the rotted wood is in a place that cannot be repaired. Damaged window sashes like the one in the photo to the left usually cannot be repaired. Wood filler will help extend the life of a damaged window, but usually the window must be replaced.
When Master Stucco repairs rotted wood trim, our goal is to make repairs that will last, and if possible, to do so without having to replace the window or door.
